Vann was also part of the United States Marine Corps in 1959 and was in a group called the Emblems. They were stationed in Okinawa following the second world war and started his music upon returning to the States.

After returning, Vann signed a record contract with ‘academy Records’, and his songs ‘Too Young’ and ‘Bang Bang shoot ’em Daddy’ went on charts.
